Asset Based Community Development - A Theological Reflection

Asset Based Community Development might sound a bit of a dry and jargony phrase - but it's really exciting. It's all about listening to what people want, and the gifts and talents already present in our communities, and how we can encourage and enable them to be used for the common good. It's about "doing with" rather than "doing to", about celebrating what we have, not the problems that we see. This paper, written by Rev'd Al Barrett, who led one of our workshops at the Exeter Diocescan Clergy Conference in September 2017, looks at this approach from a theoliogical perspective with practical applications for our service as churches within our communities. Though Al is based in Birmingham, this approach is as relevant to our rural churches and communities, especially as we look towards a more corporate ministry as the church in each place.
